(Richmond, Virginia) – The Virginia Fair Housing League Action Fund (VFHL), in response to a recent Daily Press headline article, has joined forces with local small business owners and community residents to fight the recently passed Newport News City Council Ordinance 6950-13 which bans hotel and motel stays greater than 30 days in a 60 day period and favors large corporate extended stay interests.

Today the VFHL transmitted nearly 150 unique signed letters to members of Newport News City Council from legitimate paying guests from two Newport News based hotels expressing their grave opposition to this Ordinance which shortly after the New Year will put them out of a home and onto the cold, crime ridden streets of downtown Newport News.

“It’s really hard out here now and days you have people sleeping on the streets with their kids up under trees and this is the best place to go [Wynnwood Hotel]…you have a warm place to stay and you don’t have be outside in the cold” said Aneka Wilkins a mother of 3 who would be homeless in Newport News City Council had their way.

“The hard working, low income and middle class families, are in the crust of the holiday season and now Newport News City Council wants to remove them from their rooms and force them out on the streets” said VFHL Community Executive Director Stephanie E.M. Clayton.  “It’s time for Council to review and repeal this Ordinance and stop favoring big business, based in North Carolina and California, over small community owned businesses and look out for their citizens during these cold winter months.”

The following is the text of the nearly 150 signed letters remitted to Newport News Mayor McKinley L. Price, Vice Mayor Bert Bateman and all members of City Council:

“I am a paying guest of the [Travellers Inn or Wynnwood Hotel] located in Newport News, Virginia.  I have been made aware the City Council Ordinance 6950-13 which bans stays in Newport News Hotels and Motels greater than 30 days in a 60 day period.

I write to express my deep opposition to this ordinance and its unintended consequences.  If you allow this ordinance to go into effect come January 1, 2014 then I would be homeless come January 30, 2014 when the management of the [Travellers Inn or Wynnwood Hotel] would be forced to evict me per your direction.

We are in the worst economy since the great depression and affordable housing is nowhere in sight.  I, like many other families staying at the [Travellers Inn or Wynnwood Hotel] cannot get approved for a home loan or rental lease and the wait time for government assistance can be years.

While this living situation is not ideal, it is a temporary solution during the cold winter months it provides a warm bed to cuddle up in at night and safe and clean environment in which to live.

As a voter and resident of the City of Newport News, I respectfully request you repeal this ordinance immediately and halt your planned evictions of hard-working, low income families, like ours.”

Bill Dale for Delegate in 85th House of Delegates Race

EndorsesToday, Stephanie E.M. Clayton, Virginia Fair Housing League Action Fund, Executive Director announced the following major endorsement:

The Virginia Fair Housing League Action Fund (VFHL) was created to help the hard-working families of Hampton Roads Achieve the American dream and live a life free of the worry and stress of unfair, shady, and unequal housing.

After all every man, woman, and child deserve a roof over their heads and access to the American Dream.

But sadly, Scott Taylor doesn’t share this fundamental belief.  Taylor believes he is above the low income or minority families struggling in this tough economy.

The VFHL shined light on Taylor’s ruthless record of evictions numbering in the hundreds.

But as the campaign heated up numerous community groups have outlined shockingly detailed facts exposing Taylor’s consistent lying about his military record, repeatedly misleading voters about his educational background or lack thereof, and skipping out on over 1.4 million in civil and federal court judgments!

These revelations have forced the VFHL to make its first ever endorsement in a political race.

This morning we ask that you join our members in supporting and voting for Bill Dale for the 85th House of Delegates seat.

To learn more about Bill Dale you can read the Virginian-Pilot’s recent endorsement or Bill Dale’s campaign website.

Voters deserve so much better than Scott Taylor and as a former minister, current financial advisor and community activists we firmly believe this is the best choice for the 85th District.

Housing Group Calls Out Scott Taylor on His Shockingly Dishonest and Unethical Business Dealings

Scott Taylor Skips Out on His Rent and Mortgage While Tossing Hundreds of his Tenants Out in the Street – “the Height of Hypocrisy”

“Scott Taylor put my whole family out on the street and now he won’t even pay his own bills.  Isn’t that illegal?” – former Taylor tenant LaDonna Santiago

No, LaDonna… but it SHOULD BE!

(Newport News, Virginia) — The Virginian Pilot called out his “questionable business background” and his multitude of financial failings a “troubling lack of fiscal responsibility in a candidate seeking a public salary and power to influence state taxes and expenditures.”

The Virginia Beach Taxpayers’ Alliance expressed their “serious concerns about his consistent misrepresentation of his qualifications and experience. Honesty is a virtue that Scott Taylor does not possess.”  They further say he “presents himself as an arrogant and rude candidate.

Financial impropriety, arrogance and disregard for his financial obligations are all on display as the non-partisan Virginia Fair Housing League today reprimanded Scott William Taylor — candidate for Virginia’s 85th district House of Delegates seat — for his abysmal record of repeatedly walking away from his own debts and obligations while ruthlessly evicting working-class Virginians from their homes.

Taylor is President of Neptune Realty, which owns rental properties in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk and Portsmouth.  Court records show that over the past nine years, Taylor has filed over 350 lawsuits in Virginia courts to evict his tenants, many poor and elderly, struggling during the difficult economy.  Further many of these tenants say Taylor adamantly refused to show any flexibility to pay their rent.

“Scott Taylor’s extended history of reckless financial impropriety gives voters a clear view of this man seeking office, and it is not a pretty picture,” said VFHL Community Executive Director Stephanie E.M. Clayton.  “You would think that someone with Scott Taylor’s track record of financial default, 2 home foreclosures, court-ordered evictions, and more than $1 million in legal judgments against him in the last three years alone would be sensitive to the struggles people are facing. Sadly Scott Taylor seems to think compassion is a one-way street.

“In the Virginian Pilot Scott Taylor complains that his landlord, would not renegotiate the lease on his failed business, while at the same time ignoring his own tenants, many of them begging for flexibility or a payment plan so they could stay in their homes. Scott Taylor went without paying his rent for more than a full year, according to the Virginian Pilot!  Candidates for office should serve because they care about people and want to make their lives better.  Taylor’s record and behavior suggest he only cares about himself.”

“I lost my job and was behind on my rent. I asked for a simple extension or payment plan, instead they took me to court and evicted me and my wife.  Scott Taylor should be ashamed to run for politics.” – former Taylor tenant Gary Stevens

Continued Clayton, “It is troubling to think that such a callous and irresponsible person like Scott Taylor is seeking a public salary and the right to spend our hard-earned tax dollars. Court records show that in both civil and criminal court, Scott Taylor has a persistent record of failing to follow the law, and failing to show up for court. He does not pay his bills, but expects the taxpayers to pay his salary.  Scott Taylor is a reckless, dishonest hypocrite who cares only for himself.  Virginians deserve better.”

“Taylor offers his tenants no “flexibility,” he offered no option to me and my family other than eviction from our home.” – former Taylor tenant Nicole Ryan Ballard

VFHL Takes Scott Taylor to Task: Delegate Candidate Ruthlessly Evicts Hundreds from their Homes while Repeatedly Failing to Pay his own Rent

“Scott Taylor put my whole family out on the street and now he won’t even pay his own bills, isn’t that illegal?” – former Taylor tenant LaDonna Santiago

(Richmond, VA) – Scott William Taylor, candidate for the 85th district House of Delegates seat in Virginia Beach, was reprimanded by the Virginia Fair Housing League (VFHL) today for his abysmal record of repeatedly failing to pay his own debts and obligations while ruthlessly evicting working-class Virginians and senior citizens on fixed incomes from their homes.

Taylor is President of Neptune Realty, which owns rental properties in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth.  Court records show that over the past 9 years, Taylor has filed 333 suits in Virginia courts to evict his tenants, many poor and elderly, struggling during the difficult economy.  Further many of these tenants say Taylor adamantly refused to show any flexibility to pay their rent or assist them in making good faith payment arrangements.

“You would think that someone with Scott Taylor’s track record of financial default, 2 home foreclosures, court-ordered evictions, and more than $1 million in legal judgments against him in the last three years alone would be sensitive to the struggles people are facing” said VFHL Community Executive Director Stephanie E.M. Clayton.  “Sadly Scott Taylor thinks that responsibility only applies to other people, not to him.  He walks away from his financial and legal obligations time and time again, then makes excuses in the Virginian Pilot that he didn’t pay his business rent for more than a year because his landlord refused to negotiate.  Meanwhile he throws hard working people to the street while they are begging for flexibility or a payment plan.  The arrogance and hypocrisy is staggering.”

“I lost my job and was behind on my rent. I asked for a simple extension or payment plan, instead they took me to court and evicted me and my wife.  Scott Taylor should be ashamed to run for politics.” – former Taylor tenant Gary Stevens

“It is troubling to think that such a callous and irresponsible person like Scott Taylor is seeking the public trust, to write laws and spend our hard-earned tax dollars.  Candidates for office should serve because they care about people and want to make their lives better.  Taylor’s record and behavior suggest he only cares about himself” continued Clayton.

Recent court records show that in both civil and criminal court, Taylor has a persistent record of failing to follow the law, and failing even to show up for court.  He does not pay his bills, but expects the taxpayers to pay his salary.  “Taylor’s record shows an indifference to paying his bills and meeting his final obligations while happily employing the court system at every opportunity to collect from others. Virginians need to ask themselves if this is the kind of callous, me-first politician they want representing them and their families.”

“Taylor offers his tenants no “flexibility”; he offered no option to me and my family other than eviction from our home. – former Taylor tenant Nicole Ryan Ballard
